Golf On TV Sucks

First of all, you have to give props to Steve Lowery for winning his first PGA Tour Event in 8 years, a span of 199 tournaments, by winning the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. It helped that Vijay Singh collapsed on the back nine, including 3 straight bogeys.

More importantly, the television does not do justice for how good these guys are. They hit the ball off the tee, we see the ball in the air and land softly in the fairway. Then they hit their approach shot and it lands calmly on the green. What the TV doesn't show is these guys are usually working the ball left to right, or right to left, depending on how the fairway goes, or where the pin placement is on the green.

Steve Lowery was on the 18th hole in the middle of the fairway during the 1st playoff hole against Vijay Singh when he set to lay up with his 2nd shot on the par 5 finishing hole. The camera showed Lowery from behind when he hit a 4 iron screaming to the right. It looked as if the ball was going to be in the parking lot. It turns out he hit a great right to left shot that landed in the middle of the fairway about 70 yards short of the green but we, the viewer, don't get to see that. He then hit his 3rd shot to within 5 feet, made the birdie putt and won the tournament.

It's a shame we can't see how these guys work the ball. TV just doesn't do it justice for how good these guys are. It's just one of the many reasons why golf isn't a tremendous draw on television. They would probably appeal to a much bigger demographic if there was a camera that would show the ball flight.

Unfortunatly for all of us couch spectators we will never get to see such a thing. We will need either 3D tv or computerized flight paths. As much as I love computers, the live shot is out! Pay the money if you get the chance to see them, you will be owed and a little shocked. Next topic should be, PROS MAKE MISTAKES TOO. I once saw Fred Couples duff a 3 week into a par 5, I mean dribbled it. John Daly hit a driver out of a bunker and wormed burned it just over the lip. They are all humor, now that is what I want to see more of!!

That's what they need to show more of. The human side of golfers. Vijay Singh skulled a shot on the 18th hole out of the bunker and it barely made it over the lip to advance it about 70 yards. They didn't make a big deal out of it. I wonder if the pro's egos are too fragile to be put under the spot light like that. It gives amateurs like us hope that these guys are human.
